Vitamins & minerals

The micronutrients that quietly run everything, ranked by how much they matter (especially for building muscle).

If macros are the bricks and the fuel, micronutrients are the spark plugs. You need only tiny amounts, but almost nothing in your body works without them. Switch the toggle to re-rank the list for muscle building or all-round health.

Rank by what matters most for

  • 1
Vitamin D D3 Top priority Vitamin

Deficiency is genuinely common in lifters (little sun, winter) and worth fixing for strength and bone. Topping up beyond a normal level will not boost testosterone, though.

  • 2
Omega-3 EPA/DHA Top priority Fatty acid

Eases joint aches and inflammation and may slightly blunt soreness. The old "boosts muscle growth" claim has not held up if your protein is already adequate.

  • 3
    Magnesium Mg Top priority Mineral

Powers contraction and energy, and can improve sleep, mostly noticeable if you were running low to begin with.

  • 4
    Zinc Zn Important Mineral

Important for immunity and hormones, and you lose it through sweat. It only lifts testosterone if you were actually deficient, it is not a booster.

  • 5
    Iron Fe Important Mineral

Low iron quietly tanks endurance and energy. Watch it if you train hard or menstruate.

    Calcium Ca Worth covering Mineral

Strong bones handle heavier loads, and muscles cannot fire without it.

  • 7
Vitamin B12 B12 Worth covering Vitamin

Key for energy and oxygen delivery. Very commonly low on plant-based diets.

  • 8
Vitamin C C Worth covering Vitamin

Builds the collagen that keeps tendons strong under load. One catch: do not mega-dose vitamin C (or E) right around training, high doses can blunt the adaptations you trained for.

  • 9
    Potassium K Worth covering Mineral

A key electrolyte for nerve and muscle signalling. (Cramps are mostly neuromuscular, not simply low electrolytes.)

  • 10
    Iodine I Worth covering Mineral

Thyroid hormones govern how fast you burn energy all day.

  • 11
Vitamin A A Worth covering Vitamin

Supports immune function and recovery through hard training blocks.

Vitamin K2 K2 Worth covering Vitamin

Teams up with D3 to build strong, load-ready bones.

One honest aside: the single best-evidenced supplement for lifters is not a vitamin at all, it's creatine monohydrate (about 3 to 5 g a day). More proven for strength and size than anything in the list above.
