Step 8 The messengers · 7 min

Hormones & testosterone

How testosterone is made, what it does, and the other hormones that quietly shape your body.

Hormones are chemical messengers, tiny signals that tell your body what to do. Testosterone gets the spotlight, but a few others quietly shape your body too.

How testosterone is made

HypothalamusPituitaryTestesLeydig cellsTestosteroneGnRHLHfeedback:enough = slow down

The hypothalamus signals the pituitary with , which signals the testes' Leydig cells (via ) to make testosterone.

It feeds back to the brain to keep itself in range, like a thermostat. Women make smaller amounts too, via the ovaries and adrenal glands.

What it does

Muscle

Drives protein synthesis and muscle mass.

Bone

Keeps bone dense and strong.

Libido

A core driver of sex drive.

Mood & drive

Shapes motivation and wellbeing.

Red blood cells

Nudges up production, more oxygen carried.

Tap the levers

What actually moves your testosterone

The boring stuff is the real stuff. Turn each lever on.

Testosterone Low

Rough & directional, not a medical readout.

No pill on the shelf moves it like these do.

The supporting cast

A few other messengers worth knowing.

Insulin

Storage signal after carbs; not the enemy, just context (see the carb-vs-fat page).

Cortisol

Stress hormone; useful short-term, a problem only when chronically high.

Growth hormone & IGF-1

Repair and recovery, released mostly in deep sleep ( does much of the work).

Estrogen

Men need a little too (made from testosterone); too high OR too low both hurt.

Thyroid (T3/T4)

Sets your metabolic rate, how fast you burn energy.

Leptin & ghrelin

The full/hungry pair; hard dieting drops leptin and ramps hunger.
